Ruckus at MGM hospital after woman dies after giving birth

Unruly scenes ruled State-run MGM Medical College and Hospital after a 25-year-old woman Kaniz Fatma died on Monday night giving birth to a child. Peeved over the incident, the family members and friends created ruckus at the gynaecology department of the hospital and ransacked the department's furniture and apparatus.

A group of over 25 youths from Dhatkidih stormed into the gynaecology department and smashed the window panes, computer, monitor and also ransacked the furniture at around midnight.  When police arrived at the scene, the youths fled.

Mohammed Sohail, husband of the deceased, on tuesday lodged an FIR with the Sakchi police station alleging negligence of the gynaec surgeon Karmila Kujur. The family also staged agitation demanding action. Sohail, who earns a living by driving auto-rickshaw, said that his wife was in advance stage of pregnancy and was admitted to the State hospital after doctor’s advice.

"We are in state of shock after the incident. It is a case of negligence. On Monday morning, I took my wife to the private clinic of Karmila Kujur, who after examining her asked her to get admitted at the medical college hospital for a delivery.  I got her admitted immediately, the gynaecologist carried out the operation on my wife," said the aggrieved man.

He said both the mother and child were alright, but at about 10.30 pm, Kaniz complained of stomach pain.  The pain gradually increased, leading my sister to contact the doctor.  Despite desperate search even a nurse was not available in the department. Incidentally, a nurse came across to my sister who stated that the patient will have to be in oxygen and by saying so she went away.
