The much awaited Student Union Elections at Ranchi University (RU) which was supposed to open the notch after a span of 71 months in September this year stroke a doubt mode on Monday. University’s Syndicate passed the decision to revamp the entire electoral process details by its framed five sub-committee members.
According to University Pro-Vice Chancellor (Pro-VC) Dr M Raziuddin no dates were fixed for the student union elections. “The student unions participating in this election have demanded for direct elections from the colleges at university level. This is not possible as University Grants Commission (UGC) lyngdoh Committee states that universities like Delhi University framed in a defined campus can only conduct direct elections. Our colleges are established in more than one districts apart from Ranchi due to which we had earlier thought of conducting indirect at colleges and thereafter direct in university,” the Pro-VC said.
Explaining the direct module election in specified university campus, a rule of lyngdoh Committee says, that “A system of direct election of the office bearers for student body whereby all students of all constituent colleges, as well as all students of the university departments vote directly for the office bearers. This model may be followed in smaller universities with well-defined single campuses (for example Jawaharlal Nehru University and University of Hyderabad), and with a relatively smaller student population.”
Adding more reasons for no surety of this student sake election Dr Raziuddin said, “As tenures of two members of this sub-committee namely Dr Manju Sinha and Dr Anand Murari has expired and Dr UC Mehta and Dr RC Nayak were allowed to replace here by the syndicate, the final decision report on considering the demands of the student unions and then conducting it will be done in due course of time.” On the other side, the same sub-committee’s guidelines for teaching and non-teaching staff elections were approved by the syndicate. The schedule is yet to be decided.
