Ranchi University is likely to start preparations for its fifth students’ union election from September 11. A meeting with head of all departments under RU was held at the university on Tuesday, chaired by vice chancellor Ramesh Kumar Pandey to discuss organizing the students’ union election.
Pro VC Kamini Kumar said, “The VC has proposed the date for commencing preparations of election from September 11 and all the HODs have agreed to it. However, the final decision will be taken only after conducting a meeting with the principals of colleges under RU.”
On Wednesday, two meetings would be conducted, one with the principals of constituent colleges while another with the principals of affiliated colleges to discuss the dates for election.
“Discussion with colleges is more important as every college has thousands of students as compared to a few hundred in PG departments, so colleges will have to put in more efforts in organizing the elections,” said public relations officer of RU, PK Jha.
Since its formation in 1960, four students' union elections have been organised at RU, in 1987, 2007, 2016 and 2018. The term of the latest union came to an end on July 31 this year.
Despite the dates for elections not being announced yet, the various students ’ unions functional at RU including Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), National Students Union of India (NSUI), All Jharkhand Students’ Union (AJSU), Adiwasi Chhatra Sangh (ACS) and others have already started their preparations. Membership drives are being organized by all unions at college level to woo newly enrolled students.
At Ranchi University, indirect form of elections is organised. In the first phase, students’ representatives are elected at college level and then in the second phase, these representatives vote among themselves to form the Ranchi University Students’ Union (RUSU).
