In keeping with the ever increasing demand for trained professionals in the field of radio, Ranchi University (RU) will be starting four certificate courses this October. The six- month courses will be conducted by the varsity’s community radio show- Radio Khanchi 90.4 FM.
RU has formed a committee to make the syllabus and decide on the fee structure for the courses. The proposal is likely to be presented to the academic council by August 15 and aspirants can enroll for the new programs from October. RU Pro Vice Chancellor Kamini Kumar has been appointed as chairperson for this committee.
The courses- Radio Jockey, Promo Producer, Copywriter and Radio Production Management will be open to all while students who are already doing there under graduation and post graduation from RU can also enroll for it. Each course will have about 20 seats.
“The varsity is looking forward to starting new courses in its radio station so that the students, especially in media and mass communication, can be trained under this skill development program. These short term courses will add to their compatibility to keep pace with the increasing demand in the field of FM radio,” said RU Vice Chancellor Ramesh Kumar Pandey.
In India there are as many as 1,000 community radio channels, 500 FM channels and each district also has All India Radio. With this course RU aims to bridge the gap between the industry and trained professionals.
“There is a huge market for trained radio programmers whether it is All India Radio, private channels, community radio shows or web radios all require trained professionals. This is the first time a course like this is being offered in Jharkhand. These courses are being started as per the industry trend,” said Director Radio Khanchi Anand Kumar Thakur.
The structure of these programs will be based on skill development. “A copywriter does not need to write just for a radio show. Once the students know the technique, they can grow in the ever demanding field of theatre, television and even movies. Similarly, a promo producer can turn into an entrepreneur and open his own studio as well,” added Thakur.
