RU students' union polls in Sept

Published on:

Ranchi University (RU) is all set to conduct its much-awaited students’ union election in September. Following the norms of University Grants Commission (UGC) lyngdoh Committee, Syndicate’s Sub-Committee for this election has decided to complete the electoral process in all the constituent colleges, permanently affiliated colleges and post-graduate departments by September 11.

“A meeting regarding notification of the election schedule was held on August 9. We have suggested the Syndicate members to host the student union elections within September. Electoral list in all the colleges and post graduate departments under RU should be published by September 11. We want the final process of the elections to be completed by September end,” said RU Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr M Raziuddin who happens to be the Member-Secretary of Student’s Union Elections Sub-Committee.

He added, “We are determined to conduct the elections before Durga Puja scheduled from October first week. Besides, Raziuddin, Dean of Student Welfare SC Gupta along with Proctor, Ranchi Women’s College Principal Manju Sinha, Senate members Pawan and Ram Chandra are associated with the committee.

Notably, Indian Universities are bound to follow lyngdoh Committee guidelines, framed at the instance of UGC, to conduct the student union elections. The norms clearly state that, for a university like RU having several constituent colleges, students can directly vote for their representatives at college level. But, university representatives are selected from among the college representatives elected by college students. The later is known as indirect mode.

The last student union’s election valid from September 2007 to August 2008 was held after 27 years following the lyngdoh committee norms. Five positions namely President, Vice President, Secretary, Joint Secretary and Treasurer are selected at every college through direct mode and for the same positions at university, indirect mode is applied.

It is mandatory for the University’s Senate to include a representative of elected student union which has been vacant after 2008. Majority of the student unions like Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), National Student’s Union of India (NSUI), All Jharkhand Student Union (AJSU) and Jharkhand Chatra Sangh (JCS) have started making efforts to please the students in various colleges.

“We will begin our party’s membership drive from Ranchi College on Friday,” AJSU member Harish Kumar said. Similarly, NSUI National Delegate Kumar Roshan said, “We are inviting students of CIT, Doranda College and RU’s MBA department to join our party.” Official sources informed that Vice Chancellor lN Bhagat is planning to conduct the Senate meet after student’s union elections for the sake of students.
