RU marks 2014 as Academic Year

Ranchi University (RU) has decided to mark 2014 as ‘Academic Year’ as the Vice Chancellor (VC) Dr lN Bhagat said that the university has failed to establish quality education in the institution since his joining two years back. Talking to media persons on Friday, he said that there are 32, 82 and 250 vacant positions of Professors, Associate Professors and Assistant Professors in the university and in such scenario university cannot implement quality education to its students.

However, RU officials have pledged to improve the deteriorating education by making a Master Routine from now onwards wherein the teacher’s name along with the name and department will be maintained according to their classes. “This way we can keep a vigil on whether teachers are taking regular classes or not. The surprise inspection in colleges and all the post graduate departments will be done by Inspector of Colleges, Registrar and Pro-VC,” Bhagat said.

Bhagat has made a minute change in ‘University at your doorstep’ programme. The university authorities were supposed to come to the doorstep of the colleges but now the scene will be vice-versa. Bhagat said that this programme since its launch was not functioning properly. He maintained, “We will receive the utilization certificate for the fund usage of this programme by this month and then work actively for the purpose.”

The introduction of National Service Scheme (NSS) as an add-on subject at undergraduate level in two colleges of RU for the NSS volunteers will be extended to other colleges and give scope to the non-NSS students to avail this course providing vocational skills. “Presently the course in coordination with Tata Institute of Social Sciences and Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports is being carried out in Ranchi Women’s College and Marwari College. We were facing hurdles in teaching so had to send our local teachers to New Delhi to learn the art of teaching this communication skill. In the coming six months, we will extend it to other colleges,” Bhagat said.

The university had made it mandatory for all the teachers to submit their research proposal to the Eastern Regional Centre or directly to the University Grants Commission. All the post graduate departments have been instructed to host state or national or international seminar by the month of March and publish journals from their respective department by February. Bhagat said that the publication of a compiled journal according to subject streams has not gained a positive response so they have decided the publication of journals individually from each department.

“Our Post Graduate Geology department is mulling to hold a workshop on mining wherein officers from all the corporates have been invited. This workshop will help in preparing the research finding on mines of the state which will help the state government in knowing the prevailing mining issues within the state,” Bhagat said. RU has significantly gained an achievement in 2013 since 14 teachers have received UGC grants of Rs 8 to 26 lakhs for Major Research Project.

Apart from disclosing this information, the VC felicitated two of its Sanskrit teachers who were presented President’s Award for their exemplary performances in Sanskrit on January 17 this year. This includes Professor Chandrakant Shukla in the senior cadre titled Presidential Award of Certificate of Honour and Assistant Professor Dr Dhananjay Vasudeo Dwivedi in the youth category known as Maharshi Badrayan Vyas Samman.
