In order to place university students in several companies, a separate placement cell was formed a few years back for the students of the Ranchi University (RU) belonging to various streams. Though for few students university placement cell provided a platform to start their respective career but for many others these companies do not fulfill candidates’ expectation and most companies hire them for some other job profile.
Vivek Kumar, a student of Yogoda Satsang College under Ranchi University (RU), said, “I am graduate in Information Technology and mostly we are offered jobs in Business Processing Outsourcing (BPO) and they do not pay well. We are asked to shift base and they offer us just Rs. 6000 per month in metro cities. As per educational qualification criteria, atleast a candidate deserves 15 thousand per month to survive in metropolitan city.”
Students feel it is a waste of their education qualification if they do not get job according to their profile and educational qualification. Another student, Neha Kumari, said, “I am in the final year of my graduation and I want to appear for the various governmental examinations. I appeared for an examination arranged by the placement cell for a job and found out that it was an opening for a call centre in Gurgaon and other cities. I would rather wait and prepare for the competitive examinations or pursue higher education for better career perspective.”
Clarifying his stance on the jobs offers which Students get through placement cell, Abhijeet Beltharia, Assistant placement coordinator of placement cell of RU, said, “This year we have received few proposals from several Indian and multinational IT companies which might give good offers to our students. As far as BPOs are concerned they too provide good base to the candidates. But due to lack of information students often get confuse and do not opt for jobs through placement cell. However, we make sure that those companies who select candidates do not put unnecessary terms and conditions like contract, hire fire policy which might create problem for the candidates. Most of the companies which come to the campus offer a package of Rs 1.8 lakh as a start up option.”
“We are trying to rope in more companies which offer good packages in diverse sections and fulfill candidates’ expectation. There are a few companies which offer good packages but our students are unable to meet their expectations. Accepting job is another thing but placement cell definitely provides platform to the students,” added Beltharia.
However, trend is changing and many companies now visit and recruit candidates from various other colleges functioning under RU irrespective of packages they offer to the candidates. Earlier, companies used to hire candidates only from St. Xavier’s College and Marwari College.
