RU cancels summer vacation to streamline sessions’

Students of Ranchi University will not be able to enjoy the summer break this year. The university on Monday issued a notice declaring cancellation of summer vacation this year in order to streamline the sessions.

The notice said, "Summer Vacation of 2019 declared by Ranchi University is hereby withdrawn to regularize the teaching session and examination."

The notice also mentioned that the teachers will get earned leave for this period as per RU Statute. The vacations were scheduled from May 19 to June 19.

The cancellation of summer vacations will be applicable to all the constituent, autonomous and affiliated colleges under the Varsity. This is for the first time that such a step is being taken by RU.

Public Relations Officer of RU, PK Jha said that this is a precautionary step being taken to avoid delay in the beginning of new semester.

The major reason behind cancellation of the vacation is choice based credit system (CBCS), which was introduced for under graduate courses in the varsity previous year.

"Earlier, the examination was held only once a year but after introduction of CBCS the year has been divided into two semesters.  As a result two examinations are being conducted in a year and we do not want the results to be delayed,” he said.

Shedding light on the issue, pro vice chancellor of RU, Kamini Kumar said that there was a delay in issuing the final marks for both, semester one and two, under CBCS system for the batch of 2017-20.

“The copies for semester one was sent outside university for correction by the previous examination controller and there were a lot of irregularities which we are still correcting. The result for second semester was also delayed as the company which was supposed to provide us the software for CBCS system did not give it on time so we could not upload the marks despite timely correction of copies," she said.

The Pro VC informed that under the CBCS system there are a number of criteria for filling up the examination form like a student has to pass in the previous semester to sit for the next examination, they have to score at least 50 per cent or above and many other criteria. Thus, till the composite results for both the semesters are not declared, conducting the third semester examination will not be possible.

"We cannot conduct the examination for the new batch either because those from the previous batch who did not manage to clear the examination will have to reappear for the first semester examination again. So we will have to manage the time accordingly," she said.

Kumar said that the delay in PG course sessions is also being streamlined. "We will be conducting the examination and issuing the results for PG courses by end of June. The examination department is working 18 hours a day. We are hopeful that everything will be streamlines after June," she said.

The Ranchi University Students’ Union (RUSU) has supported the decision of the varsity. President of RUSU, Neha Mardi said, “Delay in sessions has been a problem in the university for a long time. This I a good initiative and will in favour of students.”

Mardi said that the summer break made sense when there was only one examination in the year. “Now that there are two examinations, students will anyways be getting leave after the examination so losing out on summer vacation should not be a problem,” she said.
