On Saturday night, a herd of elephants ransacked houses in Harlodih village under Paterwar block of Bokaro district. The elephants ate 100 kg pulses and 280 kg rice after demolishing the houses of Birsa Manjhi and Suresh Manjhi.
According to the villagers, the herd first attacked their house and ransacked, later demolished their farm (chicken) house, which resulted into injuries to the family members. Samadhani and Aniti Kumari got multiple injuries in the incidents.
MlA Yogashwar Mahato Batul assured them for compensation.
“A shrinking habitat has forced elephants to raid farmlands and villagers have been encroaching upon forest land to build homes, increasing the man-animal conflict in the State, which has also been hit by Maoist militancy,” forest officials said.
About 70 to 100 people are trampled to death
every year in Jharkhand by elephants.
Fearing with the rowdy elephants rural people mostly in the hilly and forestry areas of the State are compelled to spend sleepless night whenever they heard about the herd of elephants crossing from their areas including farmland.
