Rotary Club of Jamshedpur Steel City, in alignment with Rotary International's commitment to girl and women empowerment, has embarked on a significant initiative to address Menstrual Health & Hygiene (MHH) as a fundamental right, not a privilege. The club, in its pursuit to eradicate period poverty, organized a comprehensive event at Netaji Subhas Chandra University college (NSU).
The event aimed to break period taboos and encourage girls to attend school or college without hindrance during menstruation. Rotary Club of Jamshedpur Steel City executed various impactful initiatives on this occasion:
Renowned activist Rishu Ranjan conducted an insightful awareness campaign titled "Menstrupedia" for college students. The campaign focused on educating students about menstrual health and hygiene, fostering a more informed and empathetic environment.
Recognizing the challenges faced by girls in accessing menstrual hygiene products, the Rotary Club installed a Pad Vending Machine at Netaji Subhas Chandra University college. Additionally, the club distributed sanitary pads to ensure that girls have easy and immediate access to essential hygiene supplies.
In a crucial step towards addressing environmental concerns and ensuring hygienic disposal, the Rotary Club installed a Sanitary Napkin Incinerator Machine. This innovative solution not only reduces the spread of infections due to unhygienic disposal but also contributes to environmental preservation by managing non-biodegradable sanitary napkins responsibly. Furthermore, it prevents the clogging of public drainage systems caused by the spongy nature of traditional napkins.
The inauguration of these initiatives was conducted by the Assistant Governor, Hetal Adesara, who highlighted the importance of taking collective action to promote menstrual health and hygiene. The Rotary Club of Jamshedpur Steel City expressed its commitment to addressing this critical aspect of women's well-being and emphasized that access to menstrual hygiene is a basic human right.
The event received positive feedback from the college community, and the Rotary Club hopes that such initiatives will contribute to fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment for girls and women, ensuring they can pursue education without facing barriers related to menstruation.
Through its dedicated efforts in promoting Menstrual Health & Hygiene, the Rotary Club of Jamshedpur Steel City reaffirms Rotary International's vision of creating positive and lasting change in communities, particularly in areas vital to the well-being and empowerment of women and girls.
