RMC orders meat sellers to buy meat from abattoir

Annoyed with the approach of the meat sellers who despite rounds of warning from the Municipal Corporation are yet to begin purchasing slaughtered meat from the fully mechanised abattoir, Deputy Municipal Commissioner Sanjay Kumar instructed them to purchase hygienic meat from the abattoir and sell it to the consumers during a meeting with the members of Meat Seller Association on Friday.

Recently, as many as five model meat shops were opened at different localities for selling out slaughtered meat brought from the abattoir. However, due to the reckless sale of meat and other poultry products along roadside and laidback approach of the Municipal Corporation, model meat shops are lying defunct.

During the meeting, the representatives of the association were made aware about the by-laws of Municipal license (For sale of flesh, fish or poultry) Regulation, 2017. However, according to the officials of Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC), yet another meeting has been proposed to discuss the matter as several representatives were reluctant over the decision.

Meanwhile, Municipal Commissioner, Manoj Kumar said that attempts are being made to convince the meat sellers to purchase slaughtered meat from the abattoir for selling it to the consumers. “Defining some legal provisions, the members of the meat association stated that a year ago the Civic Body had issued a license to them that allow them to slaughter animals in a limited number. The RMC officials have been instructed to go through the legal provisions,” Kumar added.

“We are just an implementing body, the by-laws of Municipal licence (For sale of flesh, fish or poultry) Act 2017 suggests that poultry products will be not be sold in open,” Kumar further added. The Municipal Commissioner stated that soon a rigorous drive will be conducted to shut all illegal meat shops operating along roadside. “As per the new clause, the Civic Body will soon take stringent action against those slaughtering animals inside the shops,” said the Municipal Commissioner.
