RMC girds up loins to handle post-puja garbage

The State capital is all set to see a clean and tidy dawn very next day of Dussera, if claims of body RMC are to be believed at. Senior officials of Ranchi Municipal Corporation are confident about their dedicated staff for cleanliness of Pooja Pandals added with a competition this year among Pandals to grab the top position of ‘cleanest’ tag to be announced after the over a week long festivity is over.

“We have deployed additional manpower especially dedicated to collect garbage from all the pandals. They are on duty till October 12. They are collecting garbage twice everday, first at 3-6 in the morning and then at 2-4 at afternoon. We are sure you will see a clean and tidy city next day of Dussera,” claimed additional Municipal Commissioner Vidyanand Sharma ‘Pankaj’ on Sunday.

There are around 150 public Pooja Pandals constructed this year with one in Bakri bazaar being the largest among them. The number of Pandals is almost equal to previous years, which uses to leave city under pile of paper plates, cups, plastic bags and other food and drink containers of different sizes. The visitors coming in lakhs have been turning city into a dumping yard after Ravana effigy is burnt.

Keeping city away from such garbage, RMC came up with a unique idea of cleanliness competition among Pooja Pandals under Swachh Bharat campaign. “Under this, we are rating Pandals on different parameters of cleanliness. We will felicitate three most cleaned Pandals after Pooja. I must tell you that we are witnessing tremendous change in overall attitude of those working to keep Pandals clean,” said RMC Deputy Mayor Sanjeev Vijayvargiya.

Morhabadi ground has remained at receiving end as far as garbage spillers are concerned. The congregation of lakhs of visitors at the occasion of Ravana Dahan on Dussera leaves the ground turned into dumping yard. “This year we have deployed additional staff for that too. I am pretty much sure even joggers will not see any garbage there this year,” claimed Vijayvargiya.

However, unpredictable and all of a sudden rain is something that the civic body appears to have neglected, unintentionally. “There are no special instructions to the staff in case it occurs, because those deployed are good at their work,” claimed Pankaj.
