The storm likely to affect state by Oct 11
The disaster management department has geared up for the precautions to be taken for tackling cyclone Hudhud. The cyclonic storm is expected to enter southern part of the state by October 11 evening with heavy rainfall. A detailed explanation over the measures was explained to the representatives of Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) on Thursday.
Jharkhand State Electricity Board (JSEB) has been strictly directed to repair the loose electric wires as the thunders caused during heavy rainfalls can take lives. Power Supply in the capital will be interrupted in these rainy hours. Officers posted at emergency health, drinking water and sanitation, energy as well as at disaster management departments are advised not to go on leave in the mentioned time period.
“Mobile towers on buildings might be on risk. lightning can damage them. We have been asked to vacate houses with such mobile towers on their terrace. People residing on top floors are requested to shift downstairs. Swimming in such circumstances must be avoided,” said Pushpa Tirkey, councilor of ward 52 who attended the programme initiated by disaster management at RMC.
According to officials of the disaster management, heavy rainfall in the southern part of the state is likely to be affected by the cyclone similar to cyclone Phailin in October last year.
“The state will receive heavy rainfall from evening hours of October 11. However, the effects of cyclone will be felt here on October 13 and 14. Presently, it is 750 kilometers away from Vishakhapatnam. It will initially enter Andaman and Nicobar islands. For a Jharkhand denizen there is nothing to panic since it will affect in preliminary stages,” Col S Srivastava of disaster management department said.
“People should regularly stay updated with the information provided by print and electronic media,” he added.
Ranchi Mayor Asha lakra has instructed councilors of all the 55 wards and board members of the corporation to conduct awareness drives in their respective areas. “Everyone should apply the measures taken for preventing the upcoming cyclone,” lakra said.
