RMC embarks on waste collection at night

The roads and streets of the capital city will now be cleaned in the dead of night. Ranchi Municipal Corporation rescheduled its waste collection duties from streets of Ranchi from Saturday on the instructions from CM Raghubar Das. Apart from presenting a cleaner city to its denizens, the idea is likely to help in eliminating bottlenecks of trash cars at traffic-laden streets during rush hours in the morning.

“The night time waste collection will follow a zone system as decided by RMC. This will be done in addition to the ward wise door to door trash collection which will continue as usual. Now, streets like Main Road and Kishori Yadav Chowk, which bears the bulk of traffic in the city, will not be jammed by garbage trucks” said Mayor Asha lakra.

But the idea is yet to gain the trust of residents of Ranchi as well as its traffic police department.

“It is still early to comment on the effectiveness of this initiative as it has begun recently. We will see how helpful it is in the future,” said lalpur Traffic OC Khurshid Akram Khan.

“Work has begun and it will show if done properly. It sounds impressive but the practical implementation of the project remains to be seen,” said FJCCI General Secretary Pawan Sharma.

“Initially, we will begin work on certain central routes of the city. The system will be implemented across the city in due course of time. Our employees will begin work from 8 o’clock in the night and will continue till the streets are clean and dustbins alongside them empty. Ideally it should go on till 2:00 am to 3:00 am,” said RMC Store in-charge Omkar Pandey.

For now the nightly city cleaning drive will be carried out from Kutchery Chowk to Doranda Overbridge via Albert Ekka Chowk, in and around Upper Bazaar, from Kishori Yadav Chowk to Kutchery Chowk then progressing towards lalpur Chowk and then Kantatoli Chowk, from Kanke Road to Ratu Road and from Kishori Yadav Chowk to Piska More.

As Pandey further informed, 15 Tata Ace mini trucks with two helpers each will be employed for cleaning the city in the night.

“There will be trash compactors at four points in the city- Kutchery Chowk, Piska More, Bakri bazaar and Sarjana Chowk- as RMC sweepers clean the city. The trash we collect will be processed for dumping in the same night,” added Pandey.
