RK Anand to face trial, HC rejects petition

The Jharkhand High Court on Tuesday rejected petition of R.K. Anand, in which he had requested the court to quash FIR against him pertaining to the 34th national game scam in Jharkhand.

In this case, the court had concluded the hearing on April 7.

Anand is president of Jharkhand Olympic Association besides senior vice president of Indian Olympic Association. He was the working president of the 34th National Games Organizing Committee (NGOC).

The court of Justice Anil Kumar Choudhary relied upon the material evidence indicating involvement of Anand in the scam worth Rs 28.38 crore.

The judgment has come as a big blow for Anand who is former MP, senior Congress leader as well as senior lawyer at the Supreme Court.

The 34th national game was originally scheduled in 2007. But the game was finally organized from 12 February to 26 February in 2011.

Game organizers were accused for embezzlement and rampant corruption and some people even approached Jharkhand high court to order a probe.

The High court directed petitioners to approach the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of Jharkhand Police if they had proof of corruption.  The ACB after investigation found prima facie and lodged an FIR against office bearers of NGOC namely SM Hashmi, PC Mishra and Madhukant Pathak on October 6, 2010. During investigation the ACB found evidence of his involvement and he was booked in this case.

During the hearing Anand had claimed that he was wrongly framed in the case and he was the first person to complain about financial discrepancies. He said that on June 3, 2008 he had sent a letter to the then chief minister Madhu Koda about financial misappropriation in conducting the game.

But ACB contended that Anand was also involved in the corruption and he was booked only on the basis of evidence.

Notably, the ACB has already filed a chargesheet against Anand and others in this case.
