City schoolteachers are learning tips for counseling students. A workshop on ‘Identification of Behaivoural Problems of Schoolgoing Children and Adolescents’ was organised at Ranchi Institute of Neuro-Psychiatry and Allied Sciences (RINPAS) on Tuesday.
Interestingly, the school teachers felt that the increasing use of Internet has made the students aggressive in the present scenario. “There is a need of changing the old concept of understanding between a teacher and a student. Counseling is the only option of transforming the violent attitude of students. This can be done in consultation with a psychologist,” Mathematics Teacher of Central Academy AK Mishra said.
Similarly, DAV Gandhinagar School librarian Knalini said, “Till six years back, teachers were allowed to slap, beat or scold students for their sake. But, now except for counseling there is no other method of managing students. It is difficult to handle them with patience.”
Chief Guest of the occasion Abdul Subhan, the Vice-Chairman of Jharkhand Academic Council (JAC) cum a former Psychology Professor suggested different tips on handling the students. He urged the teachers to read the face of the student since it is the index of the mind. “Teacher is the closest observer of each student in a class. The variation in psychology affects the performance of students. In such circumstances, it is the duty of a teacher to focus on every student equally. Ignoring weak students can create a sense of inferiority,” he said.
Stressing on adapting the mentioned techniques immediately, Subhan and RINPAS Director Dr Amool Ranjan advised the teachers to conduct a mental research among their students like observing the speaking, standing and grasping activities. “Teachers should consult psychologists without any delay if the identifications indicate negative behaivour. This will help in saving the life of a student,” Subhan pointed out.
Suggesting another ways, Central Institute of Psychiatry Dr Varun Mehta and Deepshikha Director Dr Alka Nizamie encouraged the teachers to put efforts on strengthening the learning abilities of students instead of finding flaws.
Notably, the condition of adolescent students in Santhal-Pargana is said to be most affected due to the behaivoural problems. JAC is in talks with RINPAS to organize a similar workshop in the Santhal-Pargana region so that teachers can get a solution of tackling the problem.
