In order to prevent mishappenings like the one which took place last month in which a patient’s right kidney was operated upon in place of ailing left one and fix responsibilities and further actions immediately, Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) Hospital is going to constitute an Institutional Disciplinary Committee.
RIMS Director Bl Sherwal said on Friday that the Committee led by Department of Pharmacology Professor Dr Manju Gari, was most likely to be notified on Saturday. He, however, didn’t say much about number of members in the committee or its legal strength, and added that all cases of institutional lapses would be dealt by the committee itself.
“The three-member committee constituted to look into the matter of Gudia Sinha case last month has submitted its report on Senior Resident Md Afsar Alam today. This report has been marked to the Deputy Director (Administration) who will look into it. The same committee is investigating involvement of Urology Department Head of the Department Dr Arshad Jamal too which is awaited. Once we get the final report about him, too, we will decide further course of action on both,” said Sherwal.
However, he added that both the reports would be sent to Institutional Disciplinary Committee which will take final call on Gudia Sinha case and lapses in it. “The same committee will look into all such matters, though unlikely future, so that we needn’t form case based committees case after case,” added Sherwal.
Notably, Gudia Sinha from Boreya (Ranchi) was detected with stone in her left kidney in a hospital in Kanke which asked for Rs 40,000 to remove it through operation.
As her family couldn’t manage this amount, she was admitted in RIMS Hospital mid last month. After Urology Department conducted operation, she was found with stitches in her right side of abdomen while left side was having sustained pain as usual.
After the matter came in light and it was proved prima facie that her right kidney was operated in place of ailing left, RIMS constituted a three-member committee to find out quantum of mistake by Senior Resident Md Afsar Alam who allegedly conducted operation and of Urology Department Head Dr Arshad Jamal who allegedly supervised the operation. Both remain suspended afterwards and enquiry is going on.
