RIMS all set to allot hostels to UG students

Academic activity is likely to begin as controversy at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) is slowly heading towards a solution as the institution is all set to allot hostels to undergraduate students of MBBS. The administration asserted that by Saturday all students will be allotted hostels and academic activity will resume as soon as accommodation is provided.

Notably, hundreds of students of 2011 to 2014 session have been put up elsewhere since the hostels were vacated and academic activities were suspended sine die. However, the allotment will be made without putting students onboard, which the students have opposed. Accommodation facilities have been provided to house surgeons and girl students of RIMS. As many as three hostels will used to provide lodging facility to under-graduate medical students.

“We have completed all formalities and now the hostels will be randomly allotted to them. Since activities have been suspended sine die there are no students in the campus and we are proceeding with the allotment without consulting anyone. We will not pay attention to individual voices on this matter,” said Director RIMS, SK Chaudhary.

Academic activities were suspended as violent clashes had broken out between students and large scale irregularities in hostels were subsequently exposed pointing towards unwanted elements occupying rooms meant for students. All hostels were vacated at the behest of the district administration to make fresh allotments.

However, controversy has again erupted with a section of students strongly opposing the RIMS’ administration’s move to call parents of warring group of students. The RIMS administration has called parents on February 18 for consultation over the prevailing state of affairs. Meanwhile, under graduate students accused the Director for covering up the root cause of the problem that maligned the image of the Government-owned premier medical institution.

According to students the scuffle, which was the reason for ruckus at the medical college, broke out when they were subjected to ragging activities. But the Director rejected the charge citing insufficient evidence corroborating claim of ragging activities. “We comply with whatever ragging related issues are brought to our notice. They had sent a mail, but did not name anyone. We have complied with complaint made by them,” asserted Chaudhary.

Interestingly, the institution suspended students for scuffle and rejected the charges of ragging in the report prepared with the help of district administration. The report has been sent to the Anti-ragging & Anti-Racial Abuse Helpline.
