Former Chief Justice of India (CJI) and Founder-Convener of Human Rights Mission KG Balakrishnan has advocated for the need of awareness of human rights in Jharkhand. He said that the State was rich, but lack of awareness of human rights could slowdown its otherwise remarkable growth in future. He added that poor quality of healthcare and education was creating serious human rights issues in the State.
Addressing newly appointed office bearers and workers of Jharkhand branch of Human Rights Mission (HRM) on Saturday, Balakrishnan said , “We are facing series of problems in society in terms of human rights. Many of the problems arise due to sheer shortage of quality education and healthcare services. Jharkhand is also a State which has not been able to exploit the entrepreneurship skills of women at its threshold. These entire combine together to create issues of human rights,” said the former CJI.
Echoing similar views, State Commission for Women Chairperson Mahua Maji said that the development of State was impossible without women empowerment. She pointed at issues like domestic violence, human trafficking and even organ trafficking, which were taking place just because of lack of efforts for empowerment prevailed since years in Jharkhand.
Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) Mayor Asha lakra came down heavily on a fraction of society which surfaced in recent years and was advocating for human rights to those who didn’t deserve it at all. “I must say that please don’t mix human rights with demon rights. Human rights are not for terrorists like Burhan Vani who was gunned down in Kashmir and for social threats like rapists. We will have to understand that rights come in company of duties,” said lakra.
Maji added that lack of civic facilities like roads and transportation were creating hurdles for Jharkhand women to go for a job even nearby, and hence many times they opted to go to Metro cities. “This has resulted in many women getting trapped into human trafficking, prostitution and even organ trafficking. These are the women who need to be educated about their rights. Domestic violence is also on the rise in State,” said Maji.
