Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members protested against the gown culture and also handed a letter to the Governor, Droupadi Murmu and HRD, Minister Neera Yadav at Convocation Ground on the occasion of 30th Annual Convocation conducted on Tuesday.
The members of ABVP have been demanding to drop the concept of robe as the dress code of the graduation ceremony and have also requested the University VC to do so as the traditional gowns depicts British cultural and must be discontinued. However, the varsity administration has already denied the demand of ABVP earlier and made it mandatory for all students to wear a gown during the ceremony.“We are staging a mass protest against the gown culture and are not against the convocation ceremony. India is a free country for over 60 years now, but the varsity want students to follow British culture, which is not acceptable in any circumstances. If even after the protest, university officers do not shed away the culture, all ABVP members will continue to raise their voice against it and will stage a bigger mass protest in the coming days. We want that the university administration permit students to wear Indian attire during the convocation ceremony,” said Atal Pandey, Ranchi convener, ABVP.
