'Rescued kids' rehabilitation must by Govt'

A month-long research on human trafficking survivors with the objective to assess the real condition of survivors rescued from trafficking laying emphasis on socio, economic and mental well being depicts that the state government needs to strengthen the rehabilitation process for the survivors. Notably, 1285 survivors have been rescued in 2015 from the vicious cycle of human trafficking.

“We took 170 case studies of survivors for research post restoration. However, we were just able to reach 26 survivors. Only 15 per cent survivors can be approached during the survey. Out of 26, 19 were women and rest nine girls were below the age of 13. The report also suggests that most of the cases were not followed by the government after the victims are rescued. The numbers of survivor are increasing frequently since 2000. The biggest hurdle was that survivors are not ready to discuss about their experience,” informed, Neela Jayaraman, a key researcher of the project conducted by Diya Seva Santhan, an NGO.

“It was also found during the research that none of the survivors are familiar with the government norms and policies including the post restoration programme after trafficking. No proper medical care is provided to the victims during the rehabilitation programme which in long run increases the trauma of survivors,” Jayaraman, pointed out.
