Ray of hope for Bokaro medical college

On the directive of State Government, the district administration has identified 25 acres of land near Biada colony at Sector 12 in Bokaro Steel City for establishing a medical college. Bokaro DC Rai Mahimapat Ray has written a letter to Bokaro Steel Plant (BSl) management in this regard and asked for earliest transfer formalities for the land.

Earlier BSl management demanded the ‘utilisation certificate’ of the land from the district administration which we have already submitted, said an official. “The Government wants to begin the construction work for the college in this current financial year (2016-17),” added the official.

Notably, medical college at Bokaro is an eagerly awaited desire of the local residents, now seen a ray of hope as the Government taking keen interest in its earliest establishment, sources said.

In 2012, Medical Council of India has given its nod for establishing or upgrades BGH (Bokaro General Hospital) as a medical college at the needful verifications. later the management initiated the process to enter into JV talk with several medical institutions like Sri Chennai-based Sri Ram Chandra Medical College, DY Patil Medical College Mumbai Manipal Medical College including others for setting up the college. But talk delayed over stake tussle.

Under the JV terms and conditions, BSl will provide its hospital (BGH) as infrastructure and other arrangements for practical teaching facility while manpower and other necessary facilities would be arranged by JV partner.

BGH is one of the largest (910 bed) hospital of the country equipped with modern and sophisticated medical infrastructures.

Run by BSl, the hospital has an influx of patients not only from Jharkhand but Bihar and West Bengal too. BSl wants to set-up a medical college at Bokaro on public-private-partnership (PPP) basis.

But the proposed joint venture (JV) of BSl with any other medical institution for establishing and run a medical college is hindered due to stake tussle.  Taking over the 'control' of the proposed medical college, there is a ‘tug of war’ between the JV partners.

BSl management wants its control over the medical college while the other JV partner wants a majority of the stake, sources said.

However, the Birsa Research Institute for Medical and Bio-Medical Studies (BRIMBS), a hospital running for the past six years at Bokaro Steel also on the move to upgrade its 150-bed hospital into a medical college.

BRIMBS has already obtained needful certificates, NOC from the state government for setting up the medical college; VBU has also given its consent for affiliation but waiting for MCI nod, official sources said.
