In a bid to make the city smoke-free large number of people took oath to quit smoking on the eve of World No Tobacco Day observed in Ranchi on Friday.

Each year May 31 is observed as World No Tobacco Day, with the aim to spread awareness about the ills of tobacco consumption. On this occasion in Ranchi various activities and campaigns were organised to sensitise people about the bad effects of tobacco use.

Some volunteers organised a signature camp in Morhabadi ground and in other areas of the city, where people showed their active participation. They wrote on a big banner as taking pledge to quit smoking in coming days.

Veneet Kumar, City professional who participated in the signature campaign said, “I am a chain smoker, every day I use two to three packets of cigarette, but this year I had made my mind to quit smoking forever and that is the reason I took only one cigarette on Saturday. I believe by practicing this daily, I will be able to quit the habbit of smoking soon “.

Half of the smoking population thinks that smoking or limited puffing will not have any adverse effect on their health, so they adopt this habit easily and this concept is seen prevailing within the youngsters the most . Friends or peers are the most important influencers to start smoking while another key factor noticed is work pressure which lead the employees towards the smoking habit. But limited smoking is also equally injurious to health and to make city people aware about it a campaign was organized here.

Abhishek Gupta, a college Student said, “Smoking is like a fashion trend among us earlier with friends took few puff then slowly adopted this habit, but I always restricted myself within a limit. But after actually witnessing an oral cancer patient in the camp organised by Dr Dhiraj Sinha was like an eye opening call for me, for the first time I realised that am seeing my coming future in that patient, the vision of that patient’s pathetic condition shook me completely and I have made my mind to quit smoking completely.”

Cancer specialist Dr Dhiraj Sinha said, “These campaigns are organized to give shook to the people. Every people know that smoking is injurious to health but how much injurious this things are shown to people in these campaign, It has been seen that people actually adopt things seriously when they see things practically, so when people see the cancer affected patients and their pathetic conditions it actually mark impression on their mind and they make efforts to quit it.”
