Ranchi faces water crisis, dept caught napping

Water crisis in several areas of Ranchi has exposed chinks in the armor of Public Health and Engineering Department (PHED) and magnified the Ranchi Municipal Corporation’s (RMC) under preparedness to deal with the situation.

little supply to no supply Ranchi is reeling under severe water crisis as taps ran dry, hand pumps became defunct, a harbinger to the tougher days ahead.

Areas such as Harmu, Hindpirhi, Tharpakhna, Hatma and Argora are facing acute shortage of water while Ratu road and Piska More were the worst affected areas on Wednesday. Water supply was badly hit in Aryapuri, Shivpuri, Indrapuri, Metro Gali and adjoining areas on Thursday. The situation did not improve even on Friday.

The water supplied in some areas is not even fit for drinking and household works. “Water comes for one or two hours so everybody tries to fill as much water as possible,” said Pradeep Mirdha of Hatma.

The RMC is deluded with requests for water supply from Morhabadi but the tanker is yet to reach the houses that are overly dependent on external source of supply.

The situation has worsened due to defunct hand pumps in many parts especially the neglected areas like Hatma, Azad Basti, Purana Argora. “Hand pumps are there but for namesake as it pumps out only one bucket of water,” said Mirdha.

Meanwhile, the RMC has prohibited deep boring in the wake of several unauthorized boring going on in many areas of Ranchi and will register FIRs against those violating the injunction.

The ban is not applicable to those who will apply for a proper water connection.

The municipal body has even asked its engineers to conduct a survey to expose the exploitation of underground water resources by residential and commercial apartments in Ranchi. The report is likely to be submitted on May 20.
