Ranchi drenches in first showers with waterlogged streets

Published on:

Denizens of Ranchi heaved a sigh of relief as clouded skies poured with occasional thunderclap for a better part of the afternoon on Tuesday. The rainfall, first in the season, relieved the people in and around the State capital from increasing temperatures this summer, which hovered close to 43 degree Celsius.

As per reports, 39.2 mm rainfall was recorded on Tuesday during the three-hour long precipitation in Ranchi. Winds blowing at 60km/h were registered too. Hailstorm was observed in certain parts of the city, resulting in a sudden plummet in mercury levels in these regions. The situation is expected to prevail for another two days, informed meteorologists.

“An East-West downward system has formed over Jharkhand, from North Rajasthan to our State, which is bringing moisture and creating rain clouds. This is the reason behind the rainfall observed today. Rainfall will continue for three days,” stated U Shrivastav, Forecast Officer, Indian Meteorological Department.

He further stated, “The isolated rains with thunderstorm will continue across Jharkhand till the system prevails. This will put a stop on the rising tendency of temperature levels. Although they will not go down a great deal, but will get close to normal.”

The rains however also created troubles, as commuters had to brave water-filled and pothole-poked streets. Electricity was cut off due to rains and winds in several part of the city.  People living in Bariatu, lalpur, Kanke, Kutchery Road, Argora, Pundag, Tupudana and many other localities had to rely on alternative sources of electricity as the supply was cut off when rainfall began.

The rainfall however has arrived as a boon to the agriculturists of the State who suffered losses last season due to drought and water scarcity. This rainfall is being termed as the best of the season yet by weather experts.

The fruiting trees will benefit from the precipitation and the soil will be prepared for the next cycle of crops. This rainfall seems to a prologue of the better monsoon predicted by meteorologists this year, following the scanty one for the past couple of years.
