From August 5 to August 8, monsoon remained active in Jharkhand with fairly wide spread rainfall occurring during this period. The rainfall deficit, which was recorded at 38 per cent during the beginning, has improved to 35 per cent by the end of the week. From August 12 the deficit is expected to further come down to about 32- 33 percent.

“A fresh low pressure area is likely to form over northwest Bay of Bengal and its surrounding areas from around August 12. Hence, a new rain bearing system is also expected to form over Jharkhand around the same. Good rainfall activity is predicted over the entire State from August 12 to August 15,” said SD Kotal, Director MET Centre Ranchi.

With the new system forming over the State, heavy rainfall activity is likely to occur over northern districts like Palamu, Garwah, Giridih, Koderma and southern districts- East Singbhum, West Singhbhum Saraikela- Kharsawan and Simdega on August 12 and August 13.

According to the Meteorologist Centre, Ranchi, monsoon is likely to be weak till August 11 with light to moderate rainfall or thunder showers at a few places. However from August 12 many places are expected to receive some rain and from August 13 to August 15, most places in the State are likely to receive monsoon showers. Cumulatively below normal rainfall is likely to occur over Jharkhand during this week.

As per the rainfall statistics released by the MET Centre Ranchi, Jharkhand is facing a rain deficit of 36 percent. From June 1 to August 10, the State has received a total of 402.6 mm of rainfall against the ideal amount of rain which should have been 625.6 mm. Of a total of 24 districts only four districts have received normal rainfall so far- Jamtara, Lohardaga, Palamu and Sahibganj.

“With the rainfall activity expected to increase again from August 12, the deficit is expected to come down further to about 32 to 33 percent in Jharkhand,” the director further added.

For the State capital also light to moderate rainfall is expected from August 12 onwards. Ranchi has received a total of 377.1 mm of rainfall as against the ideal amount of rain which should have been 648.9 mm and is facing a deficit of 42 per cent.
