In a case that has sent shockwaves across Punjab and the digital world, social media influencer Kanchan Kumari, popularly known as ‘Kamal Kaur Bhabhi’, was brutally murdered in a premeditated killing orchestrated over three months. The prime accused, Amritpal Singh Mehron — a self-styled radical Sikh leader — allegedly strangled her with a kamar kass (a cloth belt worn by Nihang Sikhs) while his accomplices held her down.
What makes this case even more chilling is the cold-blooded planning behind it — Mehron had been tracking Kamal Kaur for months, staying in hotels near her home to monitor her movements. After the murder, he absconded to the UAE just hours before Punjab Police issued a lookout notice for him.
Now, authorities are scrambling to bring him back, initiating deportation proceedings while unraveling the disturbing details of this calculated crime.
According to Bathinda Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Amneet Kondal, the murder was executed with terrifying precision and planning. Sharing details following the interrogation of the two arrested accused, SSP Kondal said that on June 9, the prime accused, Mehron, cunningly lured Kamal Kaur to Bathinda on the pretext of promoting a car showroom and getting her vehicle renovated. Once she arrived, she was attacked inside her Hyundai Eon by Mehron and his accomplices — Jaspreet Singh and Nimratjit Singh. They slapped her, forcibly took away her mobile phones, and demanded access to her passwords. When Kamal resisted, the trio overpowered her and shoved her into the backseat. There, using a kamar kass, they strangled her in a brutal act that lasted nearly 15 minutes as she fought for her life before finally succumbing.
In an attempt to cover up the crime, the killers drove the vehicle to the parking lot of Adesh Hospital and abandoned her body inside. However, a critical error exposed them — a fatal mistake that unraveled their plan. Jaspreet had inadvertently left the murder weapon, the kamar kass, tied around Kamal Kaur’s neck. Upon realizing this, Mehron instructed the others to return to the crime scene hours later to retrieve the incriminating piece of evidence, drawing further suspicion and eventually aiding in cracking the case.
Mehron Fled to UAE Hours Before Police Alert
By the time the police discovered Kamal Kaur’s decomposing body inside her abandoned Hyundai Eon on June 11, the prime accused, Amritpal Singh Mehron, had already fled the country and was over 4,000 kilometers away. On June 10 at 9:15 am — just an hour before Punjab Police issued a lookout circular — Mehron boarded a flight from Amritsar to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), narrowly escaping the dragnet.
With his sudden departure raising red flags, law enforcement agencies swiftly activated international channels, and an Interpol alert has since been issued. Authorities are now in active coordination with their counterparts in the UAE to secure his deportation and bring him back to face justice. In a parallel crackdown, cyber teams have also taken swift action against Mehron’s online presence by blocking his four Instagram accounts, including @amritpalsinghmehron and @kaum.de.rakhe, which were reportedly being used to incite violence and glorify criminality.
Motive Behind the Murder
Mehron, who lost the 2022 Punjab elections from Tarn Taran, had been threatening women influencers over ‘vulgar content’. In a video confession, he justified the murder as a “warning” to others. Other influencers, including Simarpreet Kaur (Preet Jatti) and Deepika Luthra, have since reported death threats, with one message reading, “Parking lots are not only in Bathinda”.
Nationwide Manhunt Launched
The murder has triggered a nationwide manhunt, with five individuals named as accused — Amritpal Singh Mehron, Jaspreet Singh, Nimratjit Singh, Ranjit Singh, and an unidentified associate. While Mehron remains absconding abroad, Jaspreet and Nimratjit, who have been arrested, are currently in extended police custody as investigators probe for deeper conspiracies and potential wider links.
Authorities are awaiting forensic and medical reports to determine whether the victim was subjected to sexual assault, adding a grim dimension to the already brutal crime.
In a disturbing twist, the case has taken an international angle after Pakistan-based gangster Shahzad Bhatti publicly released a video glorifying Mehron, referring to him as a “brave lion” and threatening other social media influencers. The video has sparked alarm among law enforcement and intelligence agencies, raising serious concerns about cross-border radicalization and the dangerous rise of online vigilantism with foreign backing.
Who is Amritpal Singh Mehron?
Now the prime accused in the brutal murder of influencer Kamal Kaur, Amritpal Singh Mehron is no stranger to controversy and extremist posturing. A 30-year-old resident of Mehron village in Punjab’s Moga district, Mehron has a history marked by radical activism and criminal intimidation. Having completed his diploma in diesel mechanics from ITI Moga in 2014, he gradually transformed into a self-styled religious vigilante.
In 2020, he vandalized statues of folk dancers near the Golden Temple, an act seen as an attack on Punjab’s cultural symbols. His notoriety grew further in 2022 when he contested the Punjab Assembly elections from Dharamkot constituency on a Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) ticket — a party often associated with hardline Sikh politics. That same year, he was booked for threatening Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, further cementing his image as a provocateur.
Now, with Mehron on the run following Kamal Kaur’s murder, his past actions are being reexamined under a new, darker light. Once a fringe figure dabbling in religious symbolism and political theatrics, Mehron has emerged as a dangerous fugitive with growing links to extremist networks and online vigilantism.
