Palamu tiger reserve has cracked whip against the slingshots. Slingshots are fired to kill birds. It's more for human consumption than for any commercial gains.

Youths who intrude to the jungles of the PTR invariably keep with them slingshots called Gulel. It is used to kill ground birds or low height flying birds.

Three bird hunters who were arrested in the protected forest under the wolf sanctuary, Mahuadanr of the Palamu tiger reserve,on January 20, have been remanded to jail today January 21 in Latehar district.

Deputy director south division of the Palamu tiger reserve Kumar Asish said the three bird killers were caught with the carcasses of the 18 common quails that they had killed with their slingshots.

The 18 hunted common quails were kept in a blue colour bag which the PTR team has also seized. PTR's team had seized three slingshots also.

One FG (forest guard) Rudra Nath Ram of Pakardeeh beat made out the offence report with the name and nature of the offence, name of the bird hunters and the number of the killed common quails.

The three bird hunters sent to the jail in Latehar have been identified as Jeewan Kispota, Hirmon Kispota and Dhan Kuar Lohra. All are in their twenties.

The three hail from the Karkat village under the Netarhat police station limits.

The three have been booked under various sections of the wild life protection act.

Deputy director south division of PTR Kumar Ashish said " The common quails are schedule two avian. Their hunting is prohibited."

Common quails are ground nesting game bird which love to spend lots of time on the ground and when common quails feel threatened, they take short flights only and thus are exposed to the slingshots.

Sources said this is the first episode of its kind here in the wolf sanctuary Mahuadanr in the past fifteen years or so where bird hunters were caught and the carcass of the birds retrieved .

The common quails are identified by their typical sound of call that is pick - per - wick. Youths are pretty familiar with this call of the common quails.
