Tiger reserve officials are elated following the discovery of two ‘kills’ by a tiger in the buffer area of the PTR said sources.  The kills guarantee the existence and presence of the tiger said sources.

The two kills are of adult buffaloes in the Goindee protected forest under PTR. The kills were done by the tiger on November 8. Sources said one another buffalo was hurt by the tiger which jumped for life.

DFO Buffer Mahaling has confirmed the two kills by the tiger in the Goindee protected forest on November 8 saying one other buffalo escaped hurt.

Asked that normally a tiger makes one kill and then goes feasting over it but here there are two kills Mahaling said ‘ This is really factual but here in Goindee protected forest we have two kills in one day by one tiger’.

DFO buffer said the tiger made the two buffaloes its prey and then dragged down its body for a convenient place to enjoy. The dragging has been done very forcibly and with might since the two preys were strong and sturdy buffaloes.

Mahaling had one episode more to tell the Pioneer on Thursday November 10  ‘ This year in February a tiger had five kills in just one day’.  He said he is trying to study the behavioural pattern of the tiger as to what the tiger will do with five kills if made just on one day.

A kill is consumed by the tiger for two to three days depending upon its features and weight.

On Wednesday the chief conservator of forest cum field director PTR M P Singh inspected the site of kill in Goindee said Mahaling and took stock of the situation.

Sources said one more kill has been reported in the village Goindee by the tiger but its residue has not been found.

When asked Mahaling said ‘  The village Goindee kill said to have occurred on November 9  is sans any carcass of the kill and it is believed the village folks might have laid hands on this kill of the tiger when the tiger went its way’.

The state government gives compensation for animal getting preyed upon by he tiger. A buffalo compensation is 10,000 rupees said Mahaling while the government offers free treatment to inured animal.

DFO buffer said the owner of the killed two buffaloes has approached the ranger for compensation and the ranger has been instructed to act accordingly under the provisions of wild life protection act.

PTR director M P Singh has appealed to the cattle owners to keep a close tab on their cattle heads as Singh said had there been sufficient grass land in villages these cattle heads would not have rolled in tiger reserve to put ito peril of getting prey of Big Cat. PNS

Singh said efforts are on to include grass land development scheme in villages under MGNREGA to ward off the pressure of cattle in PTR .
