The delay in the arrival of monsoon in Kerela has postponed the ontime arrival of monsoon in Jharkhand. The IMD has predicted for the arrival of monsoon by June 18. Meanwhile, pre-monsoon showers began pouring across the State on June 11 and are likely to continue for the next five days.

“Not only Ranchi but also the northeastern parts of the State like Giridih, Deoghar and Dumka experienced the pre-monsoonal showers. The people here will have to wait for some more days as there is delay in the arrival of monsoon. low intensity cyclonic effect in the Bay of Bengal is the reason behind the delay of monsoon,” said Ranchi Meteorological Centre Forecasting Office Upendra Srivastava.

“The effect accompanied with thundershower is likely to continue for next five days. South western winds would be favourable for monsoon. The through lines created over North Bihar to Odisha cast spell of rain and thundershower” added Srivastava.

Jharkhand is primarily an agricultural State and nearly 78 per cent of the population residing in villages depend mainly on agriculture and allied activities for livelihood.

“The monsoon is likely to hit the State by June 18. We expect less rainfall than previous year. The State may receive about 88 per cent of rainfall. Besides providing relief and lowering the temperature the pre-monsoon showers will also increase the moisture content and vegetation moisture index. As a result it will be beneficial for the land preparation and sowing of kharif crops,” said Ramesh Kumar the Chief scientist at Department of Agriculture Physics and Metallurgy at Birsa Agricultural University.

The change in weather has brought a sign of relief for the residents. “We are desperately waiting for the arrival of monsoon. Although monsoon is delayed, the pre-monsoon showers provide us great relief from the burning heat of the Sun,” said Shilpi Kumari at lalpur.

The Indian Meteorological Department’s regional centre at Ranchi (IMD) states that city has received 11.0 mm of rainfall having a maximum temperature of 37.6 degree celsius and minimum of 23.3 degree Celsius on Friday.
