Pre-monsoon showers leave Ranchi roads chock-a-block

Published on:

With the first spell of pre-monsoon showers, the denizens of Ranchi may be taking sigh of relief but that troubles for them seems to be not seeing an end as the streets and roads of the city remained jampacked on Monday. With the pre-monsoon rains, most of the city roads were filled with drainage water and mud coupled with heavy traffic on Monday. On one side, pedestrians were finding hassles to commute on such routes, on the other side RMC claimed the misfortune of the weather for their plans of improving the condition.

When Deputy CEO of RMC Om Prakash Shah was approached regarding this issue, he said, “We are trying our best to sort out this matter. Construction of proper drainage system has started. Instead of throwing the waste in the dustbins, people are habituated towards throwing their wastes into the drains which creates water logging and multiplies the complications during the rainy season. Awareness in people should be created regarding disposal of waste.”

Meanwhile when RMC Deputy Mayor, Sanjeev Vijayvergia was consulted he said, “The city lacks the proper sewage system. lack of proper sewage system creates water logging .Wards lacking the drainage system are being renovated by the Public Works Department (PWD). It will take a year time to complete the plan.”

The narrow roads and lanes of city were chock-a-block creating chaos on the roads. Areas such as Main road, Shaheed chowk, Kutchery Road, Circular road, Bahu Bazar, Ratu Road and Kantatoli witnessed great trouble during this water logging. Due to the accumulation of stagnant water, pedestrians found difficulty in walking on the roads. Vehicles including the school buses faced problems as water logging led to road jams.

“The roads are very narrow and poor sewage management system adds the trouble. Problem increases during the rainy season as I can hardly find a suitable place for placing my stall,” said a vendor at Kutchery chowk. “It’s a record that we have never reached home on time during rainy seasons. It becomes difficult for the bus driver to find a proper stoppage where our school bus could drop us as our original stoppages gets filled with stagnant water. Moreover traffic jams add trouble to the situation,” said a student returning home after school.

“There are lot of areas on which managements needs to work and sewage system is one of them. The roads get filled with stagnant water and as no proper shade available, it becomes difficult to walk on the roads,” said Arushi Mundra, a pedestrian on the MG Marg. Traffic snarls are mainly caused when objects like poly-bags, hair, soap or food gets into it and caught between the drainage pipes. Primarily, the debris may not cause blockage but when the materials accumulate and collect, they cause drains to block. Rain may also get blocked as rains and storms carry leaves, stones and dirt into the drainage system. Another reason of blocked drain is broken pipe which obstructs the flow of water causing blockage.
