Police on Wednesday continued its raids in connection with the recovery of sim cards and a sim box from two places of the state capital, even though senior officials chose to refrain from divulging details regarding the operations.
The raids follows the searches carried out in a flat in Hasiba Enclave in Kanta Toli and a house in Kanke in which hundreds of sim cards apart from a sim box were recovered.
Police had detained two persons, one each from Kanke and Kanta Toli, during the operations. Police are interrogating them to gather information about the possible usages of the sim cards and sim box.
According to sources a sim box is a device that contains a number of sim cards, which are linked to the gateway but housed and stored separately from it.
Sources said that the mastermind of the racquet is Dubai based Javed Ahmad. He, in connivance with officials of a mobile phone company, had got around 7000 sim cards issued in his name. All the sim cards were issued from Patna based office of the company.
Additional director general of CID Arun Kumar Singh said that they were investigating into the legality of the issuance of so many sim cards in the name of a single person.
“We are also investigating the case from various angles including use of sim cards for terrorism, spreading religious fanaticism, cyber crime and also from the point of view of national security,” Singh said.
According to reports the special branch had informed the police head quarter that procuring thousands of sim card in one name indicates that they were to be used for illegal activities. It was also suspected that the sim cards were also being used to communicate with people in Pakistan, Bangladesh and the Arabian nations. They could also be used for ATM frauds. Police investigations are going on.
