After quizzing Ranjeet Singh Kohli continuously for six days, Ranchi Police on Thursday succeeded in obtaining a remand of two days for his mother Kaushal Rani alias Kausar Parveen, also a co-accused in the case of torturing and converting her daughter-in-law Tara Shahdeo to Islam.
Kaushal Rani is alleged to be in full knowledge of the racket run by Kohli. And if her maid Harimati is to be believed, Kohli used to discuss with her for around two hours every day after he returned to his residence. Both used to go to bed at 4 in the morning every day.
According to the FIR filed by Tara, both Kohli and her mother used to torture her after her denial to embrace Islam. Kohli was later sent to jail after the remand period of six days ended on Thursday.
“As his remand period ended today, Kohli, who is currently under judicial custody, was sent back to Birsa Munda Central Jail by the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Neeraj Kumar Srivastava,” said Kohli’s counsel Avinash Kumar Pandey.
According to Pandey, the police had also filed an application seeking two-day remand for Kohli’s mother, which was allowed by the court.
Kaushal Rani, however, was immediately taken to Mahila Thana after being taken on remand by the Ranchi Police.
“We have obtained the remand of two days and will probably take her on remand tomorrow. As we do not have any other option she will be kept in Mahila Thana,” said SSP Prabhat Kumar.
Earlier, Kohli was taken to Sadar Hospital for medical check-up following which he was brought to the court in the afternoon. Kohli, when asked by the court of having any complaints against the police during the remand replied no, and was sent immediately to the jail.
Meanwhile, he remained concerned about his mother while he was taken to the court for production. He continuously enquired from the advocates surrounding him about the status of the bail application of his mother. He was also seen confirming it from the policemen who were with them.
Kohli, however, got stunned after he heard that the next date of hearing on the bail petition of his mother has been extended to September 17. He immediately called his counsel to come and meet him in jail on Friday. “Come and meet me tomorrow there,” directed Kohli to his counsel.
When asked by mediapersons whether he had to say anything in his defense, Kohli was seen losing his cool, “If I tell you everything, will you acquit me of all the allegations Tara is making against me…..you can see she is regularly making allegations against me; I don’t understand how Ministers are concerned with my family problemsIJ” “Please leave us alone….. You can see we are already disturbed; my mother is in jail…. I am in jail for so long….. Please leave us alone,” he said.
Kohli, however, believed that it is merely a case of domestic violence, which is not a big deal and looked firm that nothing is going to happen to him.
Meanwhile, Tara Shahdeo met State Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Geetashree Oraon expressing her desire to become a shooting coach. The Minister had earlier, offered a job for her.
“Tara said that she was not interested in any kind of 10 to 5 job as she wants to continue shooting, which is her passion, and would like a job which could be done by remaining on the shooting range,” said Tara’s brother Dwed. The Minister was pleased to see Tara’s dedication for shooting and has ensured to talk to the Sports Secretary in this regard, he added.
The decision, however, on seeking permission for grilling two State Ministers — Welfare Minister Haji Hussain Ansari and Urban Development Minister Suresh Paswan, will be taken on Friday. Assembly Speaker Shashank Shekher Bhokta on Wednesday turned down SSP Prabhat Kumar’s request saying it was beyond his jurisdiction to grant permission for the same.
