Chief Justice Virender Singh has appealed to the newly-appointed Para legal Volunteers (PlVs) to take their job as a social service, rather than caring about what they are getting out of it. The Chief Justice was addressing the valedictory session of the training programme held for PlVs at the premises of Ranchi Civil Court. The PlVs have been given the basic knowledge of existing laws and acts of the country. “You will have to think what you are giving to the society, not that what you are getting out of it... Please take it as a social service,” said the Chief Justice.

Expressing happiness over the selection of 30 females out of a total of 50 PlVs, Singh further said on this auspicious day of International Yoga Day everyone present here must take a pledge of saving girls in their families. Singh along with the other dignitaries also released a short film made by DlSA in association with Ranchi Doordarshan.“let’s take a pledge that we will bring the message of ‘Beti Bachao - Beti Padhao’ (Save girl child-educate girl child) to each and every village in our areas so that no injustice is done to any of the girl child in this society,” added Singh.
Singh, calling the PlVs as an important bridge between the people and the Government, said that they must have the legal literacy and should have proper knowledge about the existing laws and acts. “You don’t have to only to assist them, rather you will also have to make them aware about the existing laws and government schemes under which they would be given monetary benefits,” said Singh.Justice DN Patel, Executive Chairman of Jharkhand State legal Service Authority (JHAlSA), also asked the PlVs to keep calm while dealing with the public as well as other Government officials. “Since you will have to deal with a variety of people, courtesy is a must while dealing with others, be it public or Government officials,” said Patel.
Patel also asked the PlVs to maintain their registers properly so that he or she could also be recognised as the best PlV by the Chief Justice of India. “Best PlV of east zone who was felicitated by the Chief Justice of India during the first such programme organised for the PlVs in New Delhi was from Jharkhand. You could also be the next, hence keep your records clear and up-dated,” Patel said.Suggesting some measures to ensure better legal assistance to the people in the State, Patel also requested the Deputy Commissioner Ranchi to provide some space for opening legal Aid Clinic in blocks so that the PlVs can sit there.“Since, it is your responsibility to create legal awareness in the country, please go and work for the unorganised workers for which a separate law has been passed for them,” said Patel. As many as 96 per cent of the workers like-maids and street vendors etc-are not covered under the labour laws in this country, added Patel.
A five-day training programme for the PlVs from June 17 to 21 was organized by District legal Services Authority at the premises of Civil Court in Ranchi to make the newly appointed PlVs acquainted to the role to be played by them in future.Others who were present on the occasion included Principal Judicial Commissioner A V Singh, DC Manoj Kumar, SSP Prabhat Kumar, JHAlSA Member Secretary Navneet Kumar, District Bar Association president Shambhu Agrawal along with lawyers and judicial officials.
