Placement agencies dupe jobless youths

Question of bread and butter can push people to any length thus it presents a golden opportunity to unscrupulous entities to encash dreams of a better livelihood of hundreds of jobless youths. Unidentified agencies that come up under the nose of so many vigilant authorities take youths for a ride and vanish into thin air or just refuse to own up responsibility for their misdeeds. Capital in just days saw two cases of agencies’ blatant violation of ethics and duping aspirants by selling dreams of glamorous career of Air Hostess and plum offshore jobs at a hefty price. While cases have been registered in the alleged thuggery in the name of career in aviation industry and duping a person on the pretext of providing jobs on foreign soil the lacuna in the system rarely discourages people with such motive in their anti-social activities.

“There are mechanisms to take suo motu cognizance but it is difficult to act without complains in most of the cases. How would we determine whether an agency is harbouring malicious intentions unless there is a case to corroborate thatIJ Besides it is also a work of administration to deal with agencies that dupe people,” said a low rung official of Department of labour, Training & Employment seeking anonymity. Ironically, mushrooming agencies also indicates at demand and supply mismatch of job. Although about 43 employment exchanges are active for addressing employment concerns of youths there is nothing to stop them from falling in the trap laid by dubious placement agencies. The 43 odd employment exchanges paralysed in terms of providing assistance regarding veracity of an agency that sells dreams to daydreamers.

“There was an agency that offered Government job for those who registered with them and receive training at a nominal fee. I consulted people in my family they advised to stay out of these things,” said 16-year-old student, Nitesh Anukalp. Employment exchanges across Jharkhand were upgraded to provide career counseling to student through call centres but since its inauguration in September, 2014 the exchanges have faced crunch of manpower trained in expert advice about jobs to provide an insight into what has been offered to jobless youths by placement agencies. Employment exchanges usually pool jobs from private and sometimes from government departments however their expertise are confined with describing the job and not to assist in long term career planning. Meanwhile, employment exchanges are up for overhaul once again as the plan of the previous government to transform exchanges into ‘Jharkhand Career Centre’ is likely to be replaced by another concept.
