Placement, a concern for RU PG vocational depts

The placement of post graduate students of vocational departments at Ranchi University (RU) has not been satisfactory till date. lack of infrastructure, communication skills of students and quality teachers are the main reasons behind this not-upto-the-mark status, claim university officials.

Citing the reason behind this drawback, a senior officer of the university on the condition of anonymity said, “There are about 12 such departments here of which only five namely post graduation (PG) in business management, computer applications, rural development, public administration and biotechnology are being carried out effectively in the name of job-oriented courses.”

“Except Masters of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Computer Applications (MCA) one or two students turn up when we ask for resumes from the remaining effective departments. In such case, it is difficult to call companies for absorbing students of all the vocational studies,” the officer maintained.

Highlighting to a wider perspective, the officer focused on the university’s preference to impart quality education at low cost. All the vocational studies including some full-fledged two year masters programme and some one year diploma courses are self-financing. They are offered to the students in less than Rs 1 lakh.

Creating a regular difficult for the teachers due to this low tuition fees, a senior Professor said, “Teachers owing high educational qualifications along with good scores in National Eligibility Test (NET) are paid monthly salary ranging between Rs 16,000-20,000 which is no where comparable to the remuneration paid to teachers at other good universities providing PG in vocational studies. Though we hire teachers for a contract of 12 months but in this condition, rare prove themselves as a worthy PG teacher.”

Notably, RU Placement Cell Coordinator Pramod Kumar had also quit his job because of this low payment early this month. The senior professor added, “In the name of a reputed university, we somehow have to carry our academic session, so it is going on.”

Since 2011, RU’s placement cell is focusing on the job affairs for students of these departments but here too, the jobs of MBA and MCA are in demand. In 2011-12 session only 40-50 students were placed followed with 271 students placement in 2012-13 session. “Average package has remained around Rs 2.5 per annum,” said an official of the placement cell.

Despite being a noted state university of Jharkhand, RU has failed to adopt facilities like video conferencing for its students in placement opportunities. Noticing the English speaking hurdles faced by the students here, RU started language lab few days back and is mulling to set up the same at Institute of Management Studies, Ranchi Women’s College and Doranda College by the end of this session.

The placement cell official mentioned, “Despite having a thorough knowledge, students cannot express the same in English when companies interview them. As a result, many fail to grab a job.” Apart from these hassles, RU lacks infrastructure for its PG Vocational Studies students. A staff of Mass Communication department said, “Our students have no facilities for Video Editing. So, it is obvious that the ones interested in technical jobs at media are devoid of attaining the basic training at PG level.”

The scene is somewhat similar for PG Diploma in Human Trafficking. Due to no proper placement the student intake has always been low in this course.
