The already delayed announcement on the Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee president may now have to wait till Assembly elections in Karnataka are over. This is despite the fact that efforts are on to pressurise the high command for filling the vacancy as soon as possible.
One of the frontrunners for the coveted post, Geetashree Oraon, was in Delhi for this and returned after meeting senior party leaders on Monday evening. “I tried to convince them that Pradeep Balmuchu has enough time in office and a new face now be given opportunity to serve the party. It was indicated to me that the decision is pending and will be taken after polls end in Karnataka,” Oraon told The Pioneer.
Incumbent president Pradeep Balmuchu, who has served out his extended term, still holds the post in the interim. Besides Oraon, first-time MlA from Sisai, some prominent leaders are also in the race, including Sukhdeo Bhagat.
The decision holds significance as the PCC leader would lead the party into the Assembly polls and play a crucial role in selection of candidates. Indications are, the party is eyeing a young leader for boosting its image.
Oraon also revealed that Central leadership was convinced about Government formation but careful. “It’s clear that the party wants a popular Government and also that President’s Rule cannot be an alternative in a democracy. But keeping in mind unstable coalitions in the State, they want to proceed cautiously. Doodh ka jala, chhaachh ko bhi phook ke peeta hai,” she added.
The party is in talks with Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and independents like Bandhu Tirkey and Chamra linda.
Though they have reportedly extended unconditional support to the coalition, the Congress is not fully convinced with their change of heart over time. Besides, it is also looking at the opportunity to ride on the JMM’s shoulder in the lok Sabha polls.
