Parsees to display willow power in Jiji Irani Challenge Cup

The Parsees across the country are all set to display their willow power in Jiji Irani Challenge Cup. The tournament is played among the Parsees of Secunderabad, Surat, Calcutta, Nagpur and Jamshedpur. It is hosted on a rotation basis at each centre.

The tournament was instituted in memory of late Jiji Irani, the father of cricket in Vidharbha. He was a keen sportsman and promoted camaraderie amongst Zoroastrians (young and old) of different cities, which was close to his heart.

The tournament was started by his wife, late Khorshed Irani, daughter, Diana R Hormuzjee and his son Jamshed J Irani, former managing director Tata Steel.

The matches are played on the field but matches are also made off the field, in which young couples from these cities have met and tied the proverbial knot, an added advantage and outcome, making this tournament a grand success. This year the prestigious event is in its 28th year and the event this time is to be hosted in Jamshedpur.

The tournament will start on December 22, 2014 at the Keenan Stadium ( 08.30 am). A contingent of about 100 persons from different cities are expected at Jamshedpur to participate, watch the game, enjoy the weather and experience the warmth of the hosts.

This tournament is played on round-robin basis. There will be two matches each day from 09.00 am to 01.40 pm which shall be played simultaneously at the Keenan Stadium and the Armoury Ground.
