Palamu DLSA moots to start initiative for drug addicts

A drive for drug addicts and their de addiction and rehabilitation - the district legal services authority Palamu is mooting to start here. The task is two fold.

Sources said the DLSA has a limited scope in health matters  but its very initiative is enough to cause a stir for the well being.

As regards awareness about the menace of drugs and how drug addicts can afford to shun taking drugs, the legal awareness camp comes handy for which the chairman of the DLSA Palamu Niraj Kumar Srivastav who is the principal district and sessions judge civil court Palamu Daltonganj has agreed to ask the DLSA to hold awareness camp.

However the chairman Srivastav is of the strong view that awareness of the dangers of drugs and its ill effects are important but most important is to detach an addict from drugs, get him treatment, rehabilitate him and further to ensure he does not return again to drugs.

The chairman said it becomes far more dangerous when a drug addict becomes a drug peddler.

On being asked as to how aversion to drugs, treatment  rehabilitation etc is to be done pat came the reply of the chairman Srivastav "The civil and police administration ought to set up a de addiction centre here in town as it is now needed most."

"Apart from material requirements like rooms, beds etc there is a need of psychiatrist, clinical psychologist, trained nurse,  medicines, ward boys etc to run de addiction centre for which we will be having a discussion with the civil and police administration in our monthly district level coordination committee meeting" emphasized the chairman Srivastav.

Court sources told this correspondent that cases of NDPS act come to the civil court Palamu Daltonganj quite regularly and in the recent time there came a case of a woman caught with marijuana waiting on NH 75  to sell the consignment.

Court sources said the accused of the NDPS act hardly know as to where the drugs come and go as they have no idea of it since they are pushed into this shady business like a midway courier.

Court sources also said the smaller fish of the drug racket is caught while the big fish remains at large.

There is a mental health department in the MMCH Daltonganj but there is no facility for drug de addiction here.

The medical officer in charge of the mental health department Dr Ashish Kumar said on an average around 10 patients who are either drug addicts or have symptoms of withdrawal visit this mental health department every week.

Dr Ashish Kumar suggested there should be an OPD for people having drug abuse or for drug consumption since any strike on drugs has to have two segments one detoxification and the other anti craving medicine where indoor treatment becomes indispensable.
