Overcast weather, rainy spells likely till Nov 20

State capital Ranchi is likely to remain overcast and witness rainy spells in the next one week or so owing to a depression in the Bay of Bengal, the Meteorological Centre in Ranchi predicted on Saturday, further stating that the current weather conditions may increase the chill in the air during daytime but make nights warmer.

Almost all parts of Ranchi witnessed cloudy weather with intermittent rains since the intervening night of Friday and Saturday. According to a report shared by the Ranchi Meteorological Centre on Saturday afternoon, Ranchi witnessed 11.2 mm rainfall in the past 24 hours, highest among the Jharkhand districts that saw rainy weather durng this period. The maximum temperature during this period in Ranchi was 27 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature was 18.4 degrees Celsius.

The deputy director of Ranchi Meteorological Centre, Abhishek Anand said that rains were predicted in Ranchi till November 15. However, overcast weather with scanty rains was likely on November 16 and November 17, followed by moderate to heavy rainfall from November 18 to November 20.

“While the day temperature is likely to drop by three to four degrees Celsius, the temperature during nights will either rise by two to three degrees Celsius or remain unchanged,” said Anand, adding that a depression in south Bay of Bengal was responsible for unseasonal rains in Jharkhand.

However, while the IMD has issued a thunderstorm alert in Tamil Nadu and some of its neighbouring states, Jharkhand is unlikely to witness thunderstorms or heavy rains, officials from the Ranchi Meteorological Centre said.

“This is the time when southern states witness rainfall. The effect of this is also seen in Jharkhand,” said Anand.

Parts of Ramgarh, Hazaribagh, Bokaro, Khunti, East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum, and Seraikela-Kharsawan also witnessed rains on Saturday. MET scientists said that winter chill is likely to set in once the sky gets clear after rains.
