Online fine payment for traffic violation from April

The city traffic police is all set to start the online payment for traffic rules violation caught on camera from April.

The smart traffic management system started in the city from New Year under which cameras were installed at 16 major traffic posts of the city.

These red light violation detector (RLVD) cameras, automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras have been designed to capture the number plates of such vehicles which cross the stop line after the signal becomes red.

Once the challan reached the address of traffic rule violators, the concerned person would have to arrive at one of the four traffic police stations or the office of traffic SP to pay the fine within 15 days.

Traffic SP Ajit Peter Dungdung said, “Our team is working on the website for online payment and we are hopeful that we will be able to start it from April.”

This system will make fine payment for outstation traffic rule violators easy. “A number of traffic rule violators are from other States. We are sending them challans through post and they will have to come to Ranchi to pay the fine. If they fail, they will be sent summon from the court,” Dungdung said.

He added, “Once the online payment system is started it will save these people from the hassle of visiting Ranchi and they would be more willing to pay the fine instead of ignoring them.”

The traffic rules violators are recorded to be from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, West Bengal and also Andaman and Nicobar islands.

While there are still cases of jumping red signal in the city, the numbers have gone down drastically. “The first day we recorded over 40,000 violations but now the violations have gone down to an average of 1000 per day,” traffic SP said.

Dungdung said that while the number is still high, there definitely is an improvement.

“A lot of people are now following the traffic rules. Now that the challan has started reaching them they know that they are under scanner and are taking the system seriously. We are hopeful that the number of cases will reduce further in the coming days,” he said.
