The stage is set for overhauling the traffic system but the players are yet to move at the right pace to play their part in improving traffic in the city’s streets. Even after a month, plans for improving traffic are yet to be implemented and even small measures seem to have become like a mountain for the traffic police. Among the measures that was suggested after a high-level meeting convened by former DIG-Ranchi Pravin Singh, one-way of traffic was the first step to be implemented whereas removing excess hoarding and removing poles for widening streets were to be done by the Ranchi Municipal Corporation and electricity department correspondingly. However, despite agreement between the stake holders of the plan there is hardly any progress visible on the ground. Now with administrative rejig the whole proposal will be revisited by new people at the helm of traffic department.
“My predecessors have done some work. One-way is necessary to decongest Ranchi’s traffic. I will go through the proposals and if any addition and deletion will be needed we will amend the proposal,” said Traffic SP, Kartik S. The one-way system covering five points in the city will be implemented initially on a trial basis. Traffic between Albert Ekka Chowk, Plaza Chowk, Jail More Chowk, lalpur Chowk and Dangratoli Chowk will be brought under the one-way system during peak hours of a day. As many as 20 signages to guide movement of traffic are likely to be put up on stretches that will come under the purview of one-way system.
Thanks to administrative changes made in last few days the plan has not moved beyond papers if not gone awry. The police had given RMC and electricity department a list of tasks needed to accomplish to make the capitals street free of congestion but the departments are yet to get into action thus compounding the problem before the traffic police. “Nothing has been finalised. Some works were done by previous Traffic SP but new SP has been appointed in the meantime. We will complete all formalities very soon,” maintained Senior PRO, RMC, Ram Krishna Kumar.
Notwithstanding the delay in implementing plans to make the city roads suitable for commuting authorities are focusing on sensitising people of Ranchi before a proper traffic system replaces to existing structure. An Implementation Monitoring Committee headed by DIG Ranchi Zone has been formed for implementing one-way traffic on selected routes but that is yet to focus on traffic woes of the capital.
