To promote the scope of National Service Scheme (NSS) at university level like National Cadet Corps (NCC) as career benefit Ranchi University (RU) would be commencing NSS as an add on subject at Marwari College and Ranchi Women’s College from August onwards at the graduation level for the NSS volunteers.
Students associated to NSS would be getting the benefit of grades by availing this add on subject. It would help them in grabbing more marks in their under-graduate degree studies. The idea of NSS as an add-on-course was given to Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) last year by the Prime Minister’s Office for developing the vocational skills (like making ornaments, shoe repairing or carpentry) of the students who are often overlooked. Prominent Corporates would also be assisting this course.
TISS had then chosen some colleges of RU in Jharkhand including colleges of universities of other Indian states in the first phase of this Central Government project. RU NSS coordinator PK Jha said, “In the second phase some colleges of Kolhan University have also been located since Singhbhum covers a large industrial belt.”
RU Vice Chancellor Dr lN Bhagat at the NSS Advisory Board meet for 2013-14 session on Wednesday decided to construct around 10 kilometers road at the NSS adopted villages situated near rural colleges of this university with the help of the state disaster management department.
The decision to begin literacy programmes along with State Human Resources Development department and Women Empowerment programmes with the help of State Women Commission was also taken here. PK Jha informed that awareness about Right to Information would also be spread among the NSS volunteers in the special camps to be held this session.
