After witnessing the death of JAP personnel following the consumption of poisonous liquor, women of Gorkha Community including the senior officials of Jharkhand Armed Police (JAP) have come up with rehabilitation plan to keep their people away for intoxicating products.
Besides creating awareness, making yoga classes mandatory for JAP personnel, a women team from the Gorkha Community will be constituted soon to deal with this menace. The women group will be especially trained to create awareness among the alcohol addicts.
The recent death of three Jharkhand Armed Police (JAP-1) personnel has severely affected Meena Gurung’s mindset that she ultimately pledged to bring her husband an addict, out of this muddle. The constant efforts of Gurung has given fruitful result and her husband now has vowed not to touch liquor bottle ever till he is alive.
Similarly, Tanu Thakuri’s decision to impart awareness lessons among the addicts would be a great contribution towards the society especially among those who are addicted and needs immediate psychotherapy. Tanu, a teenage, who recently lost her maternal uncle, who died immediately after consuming lethal liquor, has decided to be the part of awareness campaign against liquor consumption that will be initiated shortly under the aegis of JAP.
After this dreadful episode, four major plans have been formulated, besides involving the participation of women. “Yoga classes will be conducted in more systematic and regular way from now onwards. All senior officers from DSP rank will have to ensure their participation. Also, in a month, twice, experts from RINPAS will address JAP-1 personnel covering different health issues, mental and psychological well-beings focusing on the challenges on how to cope up from work pressure,” said, DIG (JAP), Sudhir Kumar Jha.
At present, 19 battalions are under JAP. Approximately, 19,000 personnel lend their service in different battalions and most of them are deployed in interior pickets at naxal prone belts. DIG (JAP) said that few other proposals may be also considered in the days to come to fully eliminate this practice.
Considering this habitual practice found predominately among the personnel of all the battalion, Jha said, “We are planning to send all addicted personnel on paid leave at least for a month to drug rehab centre after verifying their records from their family members. However, the proposal is at a primary stage and need the consent of all senior staffs. Also, the checking that is being done manually now, soon will be done through breathe-analyzers; a requisition letter will be sent to the State government for procuring the machines.”
Women folks are gearing up to lead from the front to eradicate consumption of liquor entrenched in the social customs or aroused due to any other reasons like work pressure, peer pressure etc.
The recent deaths of JAP-1 personnel have not just disrupted the lives of their family members and their dependents but have also created an immediate need to chalk out effective rehabilitation plan in order to safeguard the community or else anyone entangled in addiction web.
