With the temperature in Ranchi touching 42 degree Celsius, there seems to be no respite for the city residents. Pre monsoon showers are also not expected as per the MET Observatory Centre- Ranchi.
“Earlier the beauty of Ranchi was that with the rise in temperatures, there would be rainfall and in the past few years this has reduced. This is primarily because a lot of trees have been cut which has drastically affected the mesoclimate in the region,” said Pragya Kumari, assistant professor, Birsa Agricultural University (BAU), Ranchi.
According to the BAU professor another major factor which has caused a change in the weather is the increasing population, construction of high rise buildings and concrete roads which has left no place for the rain water to get absorbed in the ground but to drain out. The biggest drawback of this urban development is that all the greenery around Ranchi has been lost.
“Previously a local system would form and cause rainfall but with so many trees being cut, the system is not forming any more. There are no pre- monsoon showers expected,” the professor further added.
According to the MET Observatory Center- Ranchi, as per the record of the past four- five years, the temperature in the State capital has been like this only and it is not an abnormal situation.
“The strong north westerly winds’ coming from warm areas like Rajasthan has caused the condition of a heat wave in the western parts of Jharkhand. We are expecting some change from June 2 as the wind pattern is changing. With the south easterly coming in, the north eastern and southern districts will get affected and some rain and thunder storm is expected,” said SD Kotal, Director MET Centre Ranchi.
As per the weather bulletin released on May 31, the maximum temperature recorded in Ranchi was 41.6 degree Celsius which is 4.4 degrees more than the normal temperature where as the minimum temperature was 26.2 degree Celsius.
In Daltonganj the maximum temperature was recorded at 45 and the minimum was 29.6 degree Celsius. Meanwhile in Jamshedpur, the maximum temperature was 43.4 while the minimum was 27.4 degree Celsius.
For the next four days June 1- June 4, the maximum temperature in Ranchi and its surrounding areas will be around 40- 41 degree where as the minimum will be around 26- 27 degree Celsius.
