A serious look into never ending traffic tail at the arterial roads despite taking measures by the traffic officials has revealed that the denial of ‘free left turn’ of the vehicles at the key intersections of the city is one of the biggest reasons behind it.
According to traffic experts, refusal of traffic cops to give passage to left turning vehicles at the intersection when traffic light glowing red is the major cause of growing traffic snarl in the city. Due to which city police is forced to increase the traffic signal cycle to clear the congestion at different intersections.Amit Kumar who is irritated with traffic system said, “In almost every big city, vehicles are permitted to take left turn even when traffic signals red. I don’t understand why the scenario is vise a versa here.”
Echoing him, a student of Marwari College said, “Basically there should be a provision of uninterrupted left and right turn in both ways road. As uninterrupted left turns can decongest the crossing to a great extend.”However, the traffic cops on duty feel permission of free left turn to the motorists will endanger the lives of pedestrians. “As we all are aware that majority of the pedestrians do not follow traffic signal so their chances of getting hit by the vehicle in the course of free left turn is very high,” said traffic cop of lPN Shahdev chowk.
Meanwhile, Traffic SP Rajeev Ranjan has written letter for the same to Transport Department and Road Construction department a year ago but to no avail. The Traffic SP sharing information about the same added, “For allowing free left turn movement of the vehicles it is necessary to widen the roads first so that a car intending to head straight can stay at last left lane while waiting at a traffic signal so that other can take a free left turn.”
