The students of National Institute of Technology (NIT), Jamshedpur won accolades in the SAE Aero Design East 2015 held in Florida, USA. Team Phoenix, a group of 25 engineering students from NIT Jamshedpur participated in the SAE Aero Design Contest (East) in Florida between March 13 and 15. The international competition witnessed a participation of 75 teams from across the globe among which Team Phoenix could manage to secure the 13th position internationally in the micro category.

Phoenix is a group of engineering connoisseurs committed to perform high-end aircraft designing and engineering. The students exhibit a high level of dedication and commitment as they share their responsibilities in the team besides an intense engineering course load. The experience and freshness in the team gives a perfect blend for the event.

The team made one flying model named ‘The Red Eagle’ for micro category. The 1.5 kg aircraft managed to lift 3kg in this given category which made them stand 13th.

The students Harsh Vardhan and Ankita Singh Chauhan, third year Metallurgy students and Abhijeet Kumar and Sumit Pandey, third year civil engineering students flew to the USA for the competition.

The certificate from NASA is the consolation for the team this time. The main sponsors for the participation have been Bank of India and Bank of India. The team was also supported by alumni members.

“We are happy with the response we got during the contest. Our plan witnessed some mistakes that led to our slipping from the top honours,” said a student of NIT.

“The participating teams were required to make trades between potentially conflicting requirements at the competition. Phoenix is one of the pristine teams of NIT Jamshedpur and is always on the go to create something new,” said Rajiv Bhushan, professor in-charge (media relations), NIT.
