In a bid to check financial lifeline of Maoist leaders in Jharkhand, National Investigating Agency (NIA) in association with the State Police, will take steps to check it after identifying their financial resources. Director General of NIA Yogesh Chander Modi, after holding a meeting with DGP DK Pandey here also expressed satisfaction over sentencing of terrorists Danish Riyaz and Manzar Imam by a Special NIA Court of Ernakulam in Karnataka on Tuesday.

Danish and Manzar were active members of Terrorist outfit Student Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), trained in Kerala who later set up their own training camps to train others, and were sentenced for seven years rigorous imprisonment by a Special NIA Court on Tuesday. Both Danish and Manzar were based in Ranchi.

“The NIA had worked hard for it and collected all evidences against them so that they could not get acquitted at any cost by the Court. It is really satisfying for us that all of them were convicted by the Court,’ said the NIA DG, who was on a day long visit of Jharkhand on Tuesday.

Referring to the Maoists in Jharkhand, the DG said that as financial lifeline is important for running any organisation, they have been trying to check financials resources of Maoist organizations so that they end up by themselves for want of finance.

“We will take up the cases being investigated by the local police and take due action against them after making proper investigations to check their financial resources in an effective way under the provisions of law,” said Modi. Properties amassed by the Maoists and Maoist organisations will also be confiscated after making thorough investigations, he added.

The NIA DG said that the case of former Jamshedpur Parliamentarian Sunil Mahto’s assassination, recommended by the State Government recently for a NIA probe, was still under consideration and will be taken up only after looking at all prospects in this regard as the incident took place way back in 2007.

The DGP said that over a dozen of cases were being investigated by NIA in the State so that the mission of Chief Minister Raghubar Das to eradicate Naxalism by 2018 could be achieved.

Earlier, during meeting held with SPs of 10 districts where more than 50 per cent crime was registered in the State, the DGP directed them to lower the crime graph of their districts by taking effective measures. Ranchi along with Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, Hazaribagh, Ramgarh, Giridih, Chatra and Palamu are the 10 districts which have been identified as the worst affected.

“A list of 20 police stations were also handed over to the DGP where maximum FIRs of theft, murder and rape related incidents were registered and the SPs were asked to take necessary precautionary measures to lower the crime graph within a month and submit a report within a month,” said ADG CID Prashant Singh. The next meeting will be held on June 16, he added.

Singh said that Kotwali and Sukhdeo Nagar police stations in Ranchi had been identified having the highest crime graph with maximum number of cases related to theft, burglary and rape this year during the last two years.

Interestingly, as per the data of crime records, there has been 30 per cent rise in the incidents of rape and 200 per cent rise in the cases related to theft in Ranchi this year as compared to last year.

The ADG said that officials right from SP to Officer in-charge level, who have not been able to control crime in their areas, might be removed as they did not had the right to remain on their post.
