New mobile app to prevent garbage littering on streets

The long wait for collection van with a bucket full of garbage in hand will soon be thing of the past as a mobile application is all set to inform people when exactly to step out of their house and dump garbage straight into the van. With the android wave sweeping through the forest land, Ranchiites through the platform based application will know just when the collection van would arrive at their doorstep.

The mobile application is likely to be available for download for android based mobile phones and will debut on May 1 as the Essel Infra Projects limited, solid waste management company empanelled by Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC), is working on the advance application that will facilitate flow of coordinates of a vehicle to the end user.

“The Essel Infra is developing an application more advance than ours. That application will provide details about current location of a collection van. People can check position of a collection van and as soon as the van enters their area they will get a message to handover garbage to the staff,” said Municipal Commissioner, Prashant Kumar.

The idea of the application with real time update on a vehicle’s position blossomed from the need to prevent littering of streets with garbage that occupants throw into the metal bins or dump on street as their patience to handover garbage to cleaning staff withers out.

“Their idea is not to allow the garbage to come out of the house prematurely. That way they think that garbage will be collected just on time and it will prevent littering of streets,” added the Commissioner.

The new application will feed live updates through a global positioning system that will be installed on mini-vans, Tata Zip, which will replace man driven carts from May 1. The entire operation could be monitored from the RMC headquarter which will prepare a roaster for those vehicles. The solid waste management company was awarded letter of intent in August, 2015 and it will submit a DPR on waste management to the municipal corporation.

Notably, the 55 wards of Ranchi have been divided in four zones, with the first zone covering wards 1 to 12 and ward 49, wards 13 to 27 falling under second zone, third zone encompassing wards 28 to 38 and wards 39 to 55 coming in fourth zone. The waste collection will be done in two categories: Commercial for commercial establishments and non-commercial for households. The former will be given colour-coded dustbins too for sorting out their trash.
