Newly appointed Director General of Police (DGP) Kamal Nayan Choubey took charge of his office here on Saturday. Choubey, a Jharkhand cadre IPS officer of 1986 batch, is the 12th DGP of State. The State Home Department last week issued a notification regarding his appointment after getting an approval from Centre. Prior to his appointment as State DGP, Chaubey was working as ADG in BSF.

Choubey, after taking charge talking to media briefed his priorities. He said, “My first priority is to check Left Wing Extremism (LWE) menace in State. In this connection, I will carry forward the earlier initiatives taken by the Government.”

He said that within a fortnight the State police will hold a meeting to review the LWE menace in State. “The State police will be provided requisite training and to tackle the menace a strategy plan will be formulated so as to wipe out extremism from State,” Choubey said.

At the same time the DGP said that he will work in bringing the disgruntled elements (Ultras) back to main stream. The new police boss’ initiatives to tackle the LWE menace assumes importance as after the conclusion of Lok Sabha election, Jharkhand has witnessed spurt in extremist activities.

On last Sunday, a Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) jawan lost his life and four others were injured in an encounter between security forces and ultras in Dumka district. Similarly, on May 28, more than 11 jawans of a joint team of 209 CoBRA battalion and Jharkhand Police were injured when Maoists triggered an improvised explosive device. The incident occurred in Saraikela-Kharsawan district.

With the surrender of dreaded Maoists such as Kundan Pahan, Nakul Yadav and Dhanewswar Yadav the militants had lost their grip in Jharkhand. But the emergence of second-tier Maoist leaders has become a cause of concern for State police. Also out of 24 districts in State, 18 districts are in list of affected by LWE menace.

The DGP, apart from tackling LWE menace, also talked about State police’s efforts to check State crime graph. Teams working in direction of cyber crimes will be strengthened at the same State police will focus on preventive measures to be taken for checking cyber frauds. According to cyber experts Jamtara district of Jharkhand has turned out to biggest centre of organised cyber crime in India. The district has turned out to be notorious for cyber crime and a large number of youths in the district are found to be involved in such crimes.

Choubey was appointed as new DGP of State last week after the tenure of DK Pandey expired. Choubey’s term is till August 21, 2021. Hailing from Kaimur district of Bihar the new DGP has mostly served in Central deputation. Choubey had served as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to Praful Patel NCP leader and minister in UPA Governments. He had also served as OSD to Digvijay Singh minister in Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s Government.

DGP Choubey is considered as sharp and strict master and has served as ADG Jharkhand Armed Police (JAP). During united Bihar he had served as SP in Deoghar, Begusarai, Araria and Lakhisarai districts.
